An ELT Glossary : Process Writing

  • Definition : An approach to teaching writing in which the emphasis is not on how "good" the final product is in terms of accuracy of grammar, vocabulary etc, but on the effectiveness of the processes (deciding objectives, obtaining ideas, organising ideas, drafting the text, proofreading etc) which occur while the text is being produced.

  • Example : A lesson might focus on the different ways ideas could be organised in a text and the effect of each on the reader and the success of the text in reaching its objective.

  • Proponents of an extreme process approach might argue that the correction of the final text is at best a waste of time and at worst counterproductive because demotivating
